1 John
1 John
Chapter 1
1 That which was in the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and our hands have touched, concerning the Word of Life;
2 (in truth, the life manifested and we have seen and testify and declare unto you the eternal life, that was with the Father and manifested unto us)
3 whom we have seen and heard, we profess unto you, so that you might also have fellowship with us; and our fellowship is also with the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.
4 And we write these things unto you, so that your joy might be brought unto completion.1
5* And this is the message we received from Him and declare unto you, that God is Light, and within Him there is no moral darknessa at all.
6 If we were to say that we have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and are not practicing the truth;
7 But if we shall walk in the light, He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son purifies us from all sin.
8 If we were to say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not within us.
9* If we would rejectb our sins, He is faithful and just, so that He might forgive us our sins and refine us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we portray Him as a liar and His word is not within us.
1. Codex Alexandrinus 400-500 A.D. a. Or “Spiritual darkness” Cannot accurately be translated as, “No darkness”
b. Reject sin as something that is bad. Cannot be accurately translated as, “Confess”
Chapter 2
1 My beloved children, I write these things unto you so that you shall not sin. But if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, the righteous Jesus Christ;
2 Truly He Himself is the ceremony for our sins; and not only for ourselves, but also for the whole of the world.
3 By this we come to learn that we have known Him, if we keep His commandments.
4 The one who says, “I know Him” but does not fulfill His commandments, is a liar, and the truth of God is not within Him;1
5 but whoever holds unto His word, in truth, within such as these the love of God has been perfected.a By this we know that we are within Him:
6 the one who says they abide within Him, should live in the same manner as He lived.
7 My beloved, I’m not writing a new commandment unto you, but an old commandment that you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the message which you have heard from He who is from the beginning.2
8 On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true within Him and within you, for the darkness is passing away, and now the true light dawns.
9 The one who claims he is of the light yet hates his brother is within darkness even now.
10 The one who loves his brother remains within the light, and there is no stumbling blockb within him.
11 But the one who hates his Brother is in the darkness and they walk in the darkness, so, they do not know where they are going for the darkness has blinded their sight.
12 My dear children, I am writing unto you because you have put sinfulness behind you for the sake of His name.
13 I write unto you, fathers, because you have come to know the One from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one.
14 I have written unto you, dear children, because you have come to know the Father. I have written unto you, fathers, because you have come to know the One from the beginning, I have written unto you, young men, because you are strong and the word of God dwells within you, and you have overcome the evil one.
15 Do not love the world nor the things of the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not within them.
16 Because all that is of the world, the lust of the flesh, the desire of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but rather is of the world.
17 The world is passing away, together with its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
18 My beloved children, it is the final hour; and as you have heard the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appointed themselves; by this we know that it is the final hour.
19 They have turned away from us, but they were not of us; because if they had been of us, they would have abided with us; but so that it would be made evident that they are all not of us.
20 In truth you have an anointing from the Holy One, as you have all come to know.
21 I have not written unto you because you do not know the truth, but because you have come to know it, and within the truth there is no lie.
22 Who is a liar if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? Such as these are an antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son.
23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; but the person who covenants1 with the Son, also has the Father.
24 Therefore the One whom you have heard from the beginning must live within you. If the One whom you have heard from the beginning shall have remained in you, then you will remain within the Son and within the Father.
25 And this is the promise that He Himself has promised us: eternal life.
26 And I have written things unto you concerning those who are deceiving you.
27* But the anointing that you received from Him lives within you, therefore you have no obligation that any man instruct you; and His Spirit guides you in regards to all things and is the Truth and is not the deception, and in the way it has taught you, you are to remain within Him,1
28 so that when He might be revealed, we shall have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.1
29 If you have come to know that He is righteous, you are to also know that all those who fulfill righteousness are born of Him.
1. Mt.Sinai Bible 300-400 A.D a. Or, “Been matured”
2. Codex Angelicus – 700-800 A.D b. Something placed that makes other people or yourself stumble.
c. In ancient Greek the word implies a deeper meaning, "To exist in oneness of mind"
Chapter 3
1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we would be called the children of God. Because of this the world does not understand us, because it does not understand Him.
2 My beloved, now we are the children of God, though it is not yet apparent what we shall be. We know that when He appears, we shall be similar unto Him, for we will see Him as He is.
3* And whoever has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
4 All those who commit sinful acts also practice lawlessness; because the act of sinning is the transgression of the law.
5 You know that He manifested so that He might take away our sins; since within Him there is no sin.
6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin; all those who sin have neither seen Him nor known Him.
7 Dear children, let no one deceive you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, in the same manner as He is righteous;
8 those who practice sin are of the devil; because the devil sinned from the beginning. Because of this the Son of God manifested, so that He might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whoever has been born of God does not practice sin, because His children remain within Him; therefore they do not sin, since they have been born of God.
10 By this the children of God, as well as, the children of the devil become evident; all those who do not practice righteousness are not of God, nor anyone who does not love their brother.
11 Seeing that this is the command that you have heard from He who is from the beginning, that we “are to love one another”
12 not like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And for what cause did he murder him? Because his works were evil, but his brother’s, righteous.
13 Because of this do not be surprised, brothers if the world hates you.
14* We know that we “have passed over from out of death into life” because we love our brother. Anyone who does not love his brother remains within the ways of Thanatos.a
15 Whoever hatesb his brother, is a murderer and you know that no murderer has eternal life dwelling within him.
16 through this we have come to know the love of God, since He laid His life down for us, we also should lay down our lives for the brethren.
17 But, whoever has the goods of this world and sees his brother in need and shuts his compassion for him, how then, could the love of God live in him?
18* My beloved children, let us not love only in speech or tongue, but also with action and in truth.
19 For by this we will come to learn that we are of the truth and shall quiet our hearts before Him.1
20 For if the desires of our hearts would condemn us, God is more important than our heart and He knows all things.
21 Brothers, if our heart might not condemn us, then truly we have conviction for God.1
22 And whatever we ask, we receive through Him, since we keep His commandments and practice the ways pleasing in His sight.
23 And this is His commandment, that we might believe in the Name of His Son Jesus Christ and that we love one another, just as He has shown forth His commandment unto us.
24 And those who keep His commandments remain within Him, and He within them, by this we know that He dwells within us, through the Spirit which He has bestowed unto us.
1. Mt.Sinai Bible 300-400 A.D. a. Thanatos definition, “A desire for one's own death or destruction” Or, “Self destructive tendencies”
b. Or, “Refuses to care at all for”
Chapter 4
1 My beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test whether the spirits are of God, because a great number of false prophets have gone out into the world.
2* By this you can recognize the spirit of God: every spirit which agreesa in the same mind that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God;
3 but every spirit that does not agreea in the same mind that Jesus, the Lord has come in the flesh is not of God; and such as these are the people of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming, and now he is here in the world already.1
4 My dear children, you are of God and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you then he who is in the world.
5 They are of the world; because of this they speak of the world, and the world listens to them.
6 We are of God: those who know God listen to us; those who are not of God cannot understand us. By this we can discern between the spirit of truth and the spirit of the lies.
7 My beloved, let us love one another, since love is of God; and all those who love, have been born of God and know God.
8 Anyone who does not love, does not know God: for God is love.
9 Through this the love of God is made manifest in us, so that God sent His unique Son into the world that we might live through Him.
10 Within these things is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the ceremony for our sins.
11 My beloved, since God so loved us, we should also love one another.
12 no moral man has ever seen God; If we love one another, God dwells within us, and His love is brought unto completion1 in us.
13 By this we come to know that we live within Him and He within us, because He has bestowed His Spirit unto us.
14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.
15* If anyone shall have covenanteda that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives within them, and they within God.
1. In ancient Greek the word implies a deeper meaning, "To exist in oneness of mind"
16 And we know and have believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who live within love, live within God, and God within them.
17* Through this our love has been perfected, so that we might have boldness together with the love of the day of judgment; because as He is, we also are to be in this world.1
18 Fear is not love; but perfect love guards out fear, because fear involves torment, but the one who fears has not been brought unto perfection in the Love.
19 We love the One God, although He first loved us.1
20 If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates their brother, they are a liar; because the one who does not love their brother whom they have seen, is unable to love the God which they have not seen.
21 And this is the commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should also love his brethren.
1. Mt.Sinai Bible 300-400 A.D a. In ancient Greek the word implies a deeper meaning, "To exist in oneness of mind"
b. Or, “Maturity”
Chapter 5
1 All those who believe that Jesus is the Christ have been born of God, and those who love the Father, also love those who have been born through Him.
2 By this we shall come to know that we love the children of God, when we love God and practice His commandments.
3 Because this is the love of God, that we would fulfill His commandments; yet His commandments are not without mercy.
4 Seeing that those who have been born of God overcome the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world, our faith.
5 Who is the one who overcomes the world, except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 This is the One who came by water and blood and the Spirit, Jesus Christ; not by water alone, but by water together with the blood, and with the Spirit which bears testimony, because the Spirit is the truth.
7* For there are three who bear record in heaven: the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit,1
8* and these Three are One testifying throughout the earth about the Spirit and the water and the blood.1
9 If we receive the testimony of mankind, the testimony of God is greater; since it is the testimony of God, which He has testified through His Son.
10 Those who believe in the Son of God have the Witness within themselves; the one who does not believe, God has shown Him to be a liar, because they have not believed in the testimony which God has testified through His Son.
11 And this is the testimony which God gave us, eternal life, and this life is within His Son.
12 The one who has the Son has life; those who do not have the Son of God, do not have life.
13* I have written these things unto you so that you would know that those who believe through the name of the Son of God have life eternal,
14 And this is the confidence which we have in Him, that if we would ask anything according unto His will, He hears us.
15 And since we know He hears us in everything we ask, we know that He has the requests which we have desired of Him.
16* If anyone has seen his brother committing a sin that is not unto their death, ask and He will make life known unto them, to those who are not sinning unto their death. There is sin unto your death; I’m not saying that He would entreat for them.
17* All unrighteousness is sinfulness, and there is the imputation of sin unto your death.2
18 We know that whoever is born of God, does not sin: but the one who has been born of God upholds Him, and the evil one cannot bind himself unto him.
19 We know that we are of God, but the entire world lies asleep within the evil one.
20 But we know that the Son of God is coming, and He has given us insight so that we might know the One who is genuine; as we remain within the One truth, within His Son Jesus Christ. This is the truth of God and everlasting life.
21 My beloved children, guard yourselves away from Idols. Amen.
